thread

This is an old revision of the document!

Thread is a substance lining the fabric of the universe in entirely uneven concentrations. Nothing creates Thread, it was simply encoded into the universe's seed as a resource.

Thread comes in several sizes and manipulability, which can roughly be broken into four distinct groups:

  • Static Thread: The space-time lattice of the universe is Thread, but not directly manipulatable - which is why it's not usually referred to as Thread, since it cannot be used by Threadwielders.
  • Anchors: Like a spider's lifeline when drifting from one place to another, Anchors are used to establish connections between remote places, allowing rapid acorporeal travel between worlds (even if that's not desirable). They're thick, robust strands of Thread (insomuch as 'thick' can be said to mean anything for Thread) that greatly exceed the stability of Static Thread, but are still not particularly manipulable… they can just stretch very, very far and can best be compared to wormholes in composition and effect. They're more something you drag behind you while you travel for a few million years, sulking off to establish a new territory. They need to be that strong to survive the strain of the distances spanned - not because travel requires a specific tunnel size.
  • Free Thread / Untied Thread: Usually just called 'Thread', Free Thread is what's used by Threadwielders to manipulate the world. It's highly versatile, very elastic on the one hand, strong on the other, and can be used to rearrange spacetime a little (or a lot, if you know what you're doing). It becomes Static Thread when used, part of the fabric of spacetime.
  • Thread Dust: Free Thread too small to manipulate or use (which is to say, one-dimensional). There's a lot of Thread Dust. Too bad it's useless.

The main reserve of Free Thread, Anigi, previously the closest thing to a home world that the Threadwielders possessed, practically destroyed itself, thanks to Valcen's cosmic mishap.
